2002 Cross-Country Roadtrip

Day 24, I-64, West Virginia August 9th 12:00pm

canoe more floating

Thankfully my itching is almost all better. If I never experience an allergic reaction again, I will not be sad. We’re heading west on I-64 having just left Cedar’s mom’s house. We’re headed to Chicago to visit my friend Melanie (remember Chicago? Backwards river?).

The last few days have been awesome. The highlight being a canoe/rafting trip
we took on the Greenbrier River on Tuesday. We went with a bunch of cool folks: Soleil (Cedar’s sister), Alexander and Orion (cousins), Evan, Sparrow (sister), and Ferdie. We left from Ronceverte at 12:30pm and landed at Ft. Springs at about 7:30pm. The weather was perfect, sunny, clear, warm, but
not roasting. We all couldn’t stop talking about how great it was floating down the river, eating lots of food (we were stocked for about 2 months), listening to music, sipping Coronas. If I live the rest of my life and never do that again, I’ll be sad. I’m amazed that we didn’t tip the raft or the canoe. I’m also amazed that no one got badly sun-burned (we applied SPF 600 about every 4 minutes). Evan got a little red, but nothing to make you exclaim “Get that man some aloe!”. On Wednesday we went shopping at Gabe’s. Have I told you about Gabe’s? Well, it is heaven. It is an outlet store that has lots of really nice, hip clothes for dirt cheap. And I mean really hip and really cheap (Express slacks: $5.99, Steve Madden shoes: $19.99, Express shirts: $9.99). My shopping abilities are greatly enhanced while at Gabe’s (it is hard to spend less than 4 hours there, they have so much stuff).

Yesterday (Thursday), we didn’t do much, but relax. We had a yummy lunch at the Moxee in Union. Union is the town where Cedar’s mom lives. It is my favorite town. It is small, beautiful, quaint (but not self consciously so). It even used to have a little car dealership.
